Eating Well in Care Homes for Older People report published

A new Care Commission report – Eating Well in Care Homes for Older People – details the quality of nutritional care in Scotland’s care homes based on an analysis of inspections from 303 care homes, complaint investigations and enforcement action.

The recommendations include:

* Raising awareness of the National Care Standards for eating well

* Increasing staff training in the areas of eating, drinking and nutrition

* Ensuring staff numbers are sufficient to encourage and help residents to eat well and drink regularly

* Ensuring menus are properly planned for older people who have diabetes, unplanned weight loss or difficulty swallowing & chewing.

The Library has a new page for the A-Z list of journals. You can use this to get to a journal title we subscribe to quickly.

The listing allows you to browse and search for both print and electronic journals and to see what titles we have in a particular subject category.

Are you looking for a quiet place to study? Do you need a group study area to work on an assignment together? Need to use a PC? The LIC has a number of different defined study areas to cater for you different study needs or learning styles. The Group Study Area is in the Study Hall (West Level 3) next to Costa Coffee and Silent Study Areas can be found on West Levels 1 and 2 and East Levels 2,3 & 4. More information can be found on our web pages or ask at the Information Desk in the LIC.

They include examples of lectures, events and course related materials covering all areas of the sciences, social sciences and humanities. It is possible to search the site by keyword, to browse by college name or to filter by country. Copyright and technical information is displayed on the website.

Research Professional

For some years the Department of Research & Innovation has taken a subscription to ResearchResearch, the leading publisher of news and information for the international research community, allowing staff to hold a personal account and tailor funding alerts to their individual academic interests. A new version of the ResearchResearch website, called Research Professional has been launched, with greater flexibility and several new features. You can access it at http://new.researchresearch.com/

If you already hold an account it should have been moved automatically from the current website to Research Professional. All of your account settings will remain the same, your current username and password will still work, and any email alerts, saved searches or bookmarked items will be transferred to the new site. To register for an account use the self-registration button on the home page or contact the administrator, Mrs. Chris Beynon in the Department of Research & Innovation ( c.beynon@swansea.ac.uk ).
Video tutorials and a downloadable quick start guide are available on the new website.

Grey power recognised by politicians

Older people are to have a bigger say in developing central, regional and local Government policies announced Rosie Winterton, Minister for Pensions and the Ageing Society, in response to John Elbourne’s review of older people’s engagement with Government.

A new national UK Advisory Forum on Ageing will give older people a direct line to Government to comment on new policy ideas, services, legislation and what areas they feel the Government needs to address. A designated lead regional coordinator will support local older people’s forums, who will work with them to set up Regional Forums play a vital role in addressing regional issues and provide a channel of communication between local and national Government.
