SCIE Social Care TV

The SCIE Social Care TV website is a freely available online television channel provided by the Social Care Institute for Excellence. The site contains short films on all aspects of the social care sector and will be a very useful resources for students, researchers and practitioners.

Child sex offenders are switching between the internet and the offline world with increasing frequency & severity in order to target and (in some cases) abduct young victims and parents could & should do more, claims the UK national policing centre for child protection – the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.

Almost 5,500 reports were received by the Centre during the past 12 months of which 2,500 came from members of the public using the organisation’s unique online ‘CEOP Report’ button.  Anyone providing an online environment where children go can apply to embed the ‘CEOP Report’ button by visiting www.ceop.police.uk/digitallibrary. 1,373 of those reports were from young children themselves of which 89% related specifically to instances of grooming.

Minister sees how Welsh Assembly Government projects are helping substance misuse services

Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Social Justice, Dr Brian Gibbons, has seen how a number of new Welsh Assembly Government projects are helping substance misuse service users when he attended the Gwent Service User Seminar at Greenmeadow Farm in Cwmbran.

Eating Well in Care Homes for Older People report published

 A new Care Commission report – Eating Well in Care Homes for Older People – details the quality of nutritional care in Scotland’s care homes based on an analysis of inspections from 303 care homes, complaint investigations and enforcement action.

The recommendations include:

* Raising awareness of the National Care Standards for eating well

* Increasing staff training in the areas of eating, drinking and nutrition

* Ensuring staff numbers are sufficient to encourage and help residents to eat well and drink regularly 

* Ensuring menus are properly planned for older people who have diabetes, unplanned weight loss or difficulty swallowing & chewing.

Children’s Low Vision project launched

Rhodri Morgan, Welsh Assembly Government’s First Minister spoke at the the annual Welsh Eye Care Conference at Cardiff University’s School of Optometry. 

 

He said: “As part of our Welsh Eye Care Initiative we are funding the Children’s Low Vision project, which enables children and young people with Low Vision to access the services provided by health, education, social care and third sector organisations.  It also encourages multi-disciplinary working between professionals from health, education, social care and third sector organisations. We also look forward to the launch of the Children’s Low Vision Toolkit in a few months time”.

The new books search is now working in Voyager. Simply click the New items tab and select the time period you want to search. You can also restrict your results to a particular location such as the Library and Information Centre.

A-Z list of journals

The Library has a new page for the A-Z list of journals.  You can use this to get to a journal title we subscribe to quickly.

The listing allows you to browse and search for both print and electronic journals and to see what titles we have in a particular subject category.

Are you looking for a quiet place to study? Do you need a group study area to work on an assignment together? Need to use a PC? The LIC has a number of different defined study areas to cater for you different study needs or learning styles. The Group Study Area is in the Study Hall (West Level 3) next to Costa Coffee and Silent Study Areas can be found on West Levels 1 and 2 and East Levels 2,3 & 4. More information can be found on our web pages or ask at the Information Desk in the LIC.

Its remit includes NHS social care services, nursing homes, dentists and mental health services. Its website provides information on its aims and remit. It provides access to press releases and reports containing guidelines on standards in social care for professionals and assessments of quality and policy in health and social care.
